Tonto Narrows

Tonto Creek Narrows

YouTube member: ruggedjamil's trip to the Tonto Narrows recreation area near Gisela, AZ.

A post on the Hike Arizona hikearizona.com website mentions that the access trail to the Tonto Narrows is now closed to all public use and the parking area by the trailhead has been blocked off with boulders so no one can park there now. Other access trails are known to this area so its best to check around.

Contact the Payson Ranger District at Phone Number: (928) 474-7900 to get the latest Tonto Narrows, and Hell's Gate Wilderness Area news and access information.

Update: 2/2/09 - I just talked with Larry at the Payson Ranger District - Tonto Narrows is open and the route to the area is as follows: at the Gisela trailhead parking area you see the white fence go to the left and go around and you can take some sort of trail that goes north along the barbed wire fence to the access area to the narrows. You will be hiking on the Tonto National Forest property.

Update 10-10-09 - Looks like people are not using this access area anymore. Hike Arizona .com has a new route that takes you over a ridge top, then hiking down to the river.
